Winter can be a magical season for a wedding. A winter wedding is meant to sparkle like new snow on a clear evening. The bride and groom can travel by horse and carriage to the reception, complete with a fur throw to keep them warm of course! Even if you won't have a snowy backdrop, the darker skies and indoor atmosphere invite ample use of lights, sparkles, and reflective things.
Many of the winter wedding decorations you may seek will already be widely available for the holidays at a considerable discount if purchased after Christmas. Candles are a good decorating item to get on discount and they have a hundred uses. Winter candles include shapes such as snowflakes, stars, and candy canes, and fresh scents such as evergreen or mint. Sometimes the simplest design is the most elegant: clear or frosted glass holders with candles in white, lavender, periwinkle blue, or pink will artfully dress up your wedding or reception. Or add a sprinkling of snowflake, star, or heart confetti to sparkle in the light.
While flowers can be expensive, roses and calla lilies are always available. Poinsettias are always an economical choice, available in white, yellow, and pink, as well as red. Gardenias are great for floating in a bowl with candles. For a more original arrangement, combine hydrangeas with pomegranates and eucalyptus. Also consider using the following natural elements: Pine Cones, Holly, Berries, Evergreen, Ivy, Mistletoe, Oranges, Cloves and Cinnamon Sticks.
Glass ornaments should also be considered when decorating for your wedding. Choose ornaments in snowflake, star, and heart shapes. Hang them on trees, flower arrangements, or on candle holders. Make a garland decorated with these ornaments and string it where your lighting can enhance its beauty. Or use a crystal bouquet for that extra wintery feel. As a bonus, you'll get to keep your bouquet forever.
Gold or silver accents are elegant with winter botanical arrangements, but you may also consider a cocoa or sable brown to compliment your wedding colors. Use complimentary color palates for dramatic results. For example, by using a dark color like burgundy with a softer one like pink, you provide your guests with an unexpected and romantic feast for the eyes.
Bells are an excellent winter wedding decoration. Tie tiny bells into your botanical arrangements; set them across the reception tables to encourage guests to ring and toast; or give them as wedding favors to guests as they enter the church, so that they can ring them as the married couple leave. Tie the bell favors to ribbons and have the ribbons printed with the names and dates of the wedding.
