Registering For Gifts 101

What Is A Registry?
A registry is a wish list of items to assist the bride and groom in setting up their new household. It usually includes dishes, glasses, flatware, table linens, cookware, small appliances, kitchen accessories, bath linens and accessories, and anything else they may need in their new home.

Why Register?
Although some couples are reluctant to register for gifts, it is actually helpful to guests to have a gift registry to consult. It saves people time and frustration, as they may not know your taste, or may not have a lot of time to go shopping. Know that your guests expect and want to give you a gift on this happy occasion. Even though it’s not polite to blatantly ask for gifts or mention them in any way on your invitations, it’s an accepted tradition that showers and weddings require gifts, and a registry makes it easier on everyone.

When Is The Best Time To Register?
Start thinking about your list as soon as possible after your engagement, and have at least some items chosen four to six months before the wedding date. The first group of items may get depleted early on, especially if you’re lucky enough to be honored with several showers. Also, some stores stock items seasonally, and your engagement may last through a few different seasons! So be prepared to add to the list during the months leading up to the big day.

Where Should One Register?
Choose at least two and up to four stores. At least one should be a national chain so guests anywhere in the country can easily shop. Most stores provide Internet registry services, and most of the major wedding planning websites allow guests to view all your lists at once. The ability to order online provides a high level of convenience for both you and your guests, because you can make changes and additions online and they can shop from the comfort of home.

How Is It Done?
It’s best to do the initial registry in the store. This can be fun to do as a couple, but it is perfectly fine if the bride shops by herself or with a friend. Again, additional items can usually be added online at any time.
