“Trash the Dress”

“Trash the Dress” is an attention getting phrase coined by the wedding photography community to photograph brides in non-typical locations, such as in rivers, lakes, under bridges, farms, warehouses, in grungy areas and so on. The whole purpose is to artistically enhance the bride’s beauty through creative photography. Many brides today want more interesting photographs for their wedding albums. Rather than just having formals, and “photo-journalism style” photographs, a growing number of brides want albums that have striking pictures of themselves in their dresses. That’s also what wedding photographers strive to offer.

In the past, brides have carefully cleaned and stored their dresses eventually for use by their own daughter. While they secretly know that their daughter will probably want her own stylish dress, they cannot bear to do anything but clean the dress and put it away for many years of closet filling storage. With the advent of “Trash the Dress,” a bride has a chance to express herself after the honeymoon, have a lot of fun and get some great photographs to round out her album. No, the dresses aren’t usually trashed, but they will likely need cleaning after a session. So brides delay the cleaning until after the honeymoon and the final photography shoot.
