A Calligraphy Primer

The invitations are beautiful…but your handwriting is less than stellar. Plus, the thought of addressing, stuffing, sealing and stamping invitations for your list of 400 invited guests just doesn’t seem appealing. What do you do? Hire a calligrapher to assist you with any or all of these tasks.

Consider having your wedding invitations addressed by a professional calligrapher if you have 100 or more invitations to send out. For lists of this size, it is well worth the money and provides guests with a beautiful first impression of your wedding.

There are several options for calligraphers:
Ask a friend who has beautiful handwriting
Hire a professional calligrapher
Have the envelopes printed with computerized calligraphy

Calligraphers usually offer several different writing styles and even different ink colors, so that the look of your invitations can be matched as closely as possible.

Allow plenty of time
During the peak wedding season, calligraphers may need several weeks of lead time. Many calligraphers work out of their homes and offer their services on a first-come, first-serve basis. Aim to have the envelopes to the calligrapher one month before you plan to mail out the invitations. This also allows plenty of time for additions and corrections.

Provide an organized list
Most calligraphers will want a typed list of the names and addresses, exactly as you’d like them to appear. It may be easier to use a spreadsheet, which will also come in handy as you track the responses, gifts and thank you notes.

What can you expect to pay?
The average cost for handwritten calligraphy is $2.00-$4.00 per envelope. The cost will vary depending on whether you have inner and outer envelopes, whether they are lined, and which style of calligraphy is used, as well as other factors, such as ink color. Stuffing, sealing and stamping services are usually an extra charge, and costs for this vary widely among calligraphers.
Keep in mind that your calligrapher can also lend her hand to write beautiful place cards, table cards, menu cards, and anything else that will make your wedding extra special and elegant.
