Elements of the Wedding Program
Many couples choose to provide a program to their guests at the wedding ceremony. Although this is certainly not mandatory, it is a nice way to provide guests with information about the ceremony and the wedding party, and offers yet another option for incorporating your creativity into your wedding.
What Must Be Included?
-
The date, time and location of the ceremony
-
The names of the couple (either full names or first names)
-
The order of the wedding service
Other Information That Is Often Included
-
The names of the wedding party and immediate family members. It is a nice idea to include the relationship of each person to the couple.
-
The names and composers of songs played during the service
-
The couple’s future address. Adding the date you will be returning from the honeymoon can also be a helpful touch. For example, it may read “At Home After April 14, 2008,” and then list the address below.
-
A note of thanks from the couple to their parents and/or the guests in general
-
A dedication to deceased family members or friends. This is especially nice to include when there is a memory candle or flower element during the service so guests know the reason for it.
-
The location of the reception (especially if it is different from the ceremony location). Assist your guests by providing brief driving directions and parking information as well.
Additional Ideas
-
A brief timeline of events at the reception so guests aren’t left wondering when dinner will be served. It doesn’t have to be complicated, simply list the approximate times of the cocktail hour, dinner, introductions of the wedding party, toasts, cake cutting and the couple’s departure.
-
A description of the traditional rites taking place during the ceremony, especially if the couple is combining two cultural backgrounds and some of the guests may not be familiar with the ceremony elements.
-
Literary quotes, poetry or song lyrics
-
Photos of the couple and/or the family and wedding party, or other graphics such as a monogram
-
Words to readings or prayers, especially if the congregation is to participate
-
Interesting facts about the ceremony and reception locations
