Types of Wedding Receptions

Before you decide what’s on the menu, consider how you want to serve your guests. Your decision can make a significant impact on your budget.

Sit-Down Service - Evening after 6pm
A seated service includes a wait staff to serve your guests. Many consider this to be a more formal type of reception. Types of service include:
  1. Plated - Guests are served the full meal pre-arranged on their plate.
  2. Russian - Plates are present at the tables and the guests are served each course from platters.
  3. French - Two waiters serve each guest one at a time. One holding the platter while the other serves.
Buffet Service - Morning, noon or evening
A buffet service allows guests to select from a variety of food. You may include wait staff to serve the food or guests can serve themselves. Types of service include:
  1. Buffet Table - Long tables where the food is displayed and served. Guests can return to the buffet table as often as they like and the food is continuously replenished during the course of the reception.
  2. Food Stations - Smaller tables that contain one particular cuisine. Stations are scattered throughout the room to avoid the “buffet line” and guests can move around easily.
Hors d’oeuvres Service - Early or late afternoon
A hors d’oeuvres service has waiters pass through a room offering guests various types of finger foods. Types of service include:
  1. Pre-Reception Service - Usually just before the guests are seated in the reception area and /or during the cocktail hour.
  2. Full Service - Passed hors d’oeuvres are extended throughout the entire event to serve as the entire meal.
Family Style Service - Anytime
A seated service including a wait staff to serve your guests. Each table receives platters of food right at the table. Many consider this to be a more informal type of reception.
